Aquarium Decorations

Although maintaining an aquarium in your home is a serious business that involves a lot of hard work and enterprise, they are, by and large, decorative pieces where beautiful and rare fish are put up for display. Hence, aquarium decorations are something that you have to consider seriously while setting up your aquarium. Many people make the critical mistake of taking this issue very lightly and end up putting anything and everything into their aquarium. As we shall see, this can have disastrous consequences.

Somewhere on your list of fish tank supplies, there will be the heading of aquarium decorations. This can include a lot of things ranging from seaweed to gravel to coral to aquarium backgrounds. The intent behind getting all of this for your fish tank is twofold. First, you want to create as close an environment as possible to the natural habitat for your fish. Second, you want to make your aquarium look good, feel good, and impart to it that feel of marine life that it is supposed to represent. However, your aquarium decorations have to be in harmony with the type of fish that you are keeping in your aquarium and should not, in any way, harm the growth and development of the fish.

Aquarium plants and gravel are the first on every aquarist’s list of aquarium decorations – they are the bare minimum that everyone has to have in their fish aquariums. The plants and gravel that you choose will depend on the fish you have and you can consult your nearest aquarium store (or on the Internet) for the type of plant and gravel you should use. In fact, there are certain aquatic plants that can be used as indicators of the water conditions in the aquarium – these sensitive plants die first if the water starts to go bad ever so slightly. Regarding the gravel that you use, you have various choices from simple garden gravel, to live rock – which provides water purifications services.

Other decorations that are quite common in aquariums are driftwood, shipwrecks, shells, bridges, and other objects connected in some way or the other to marine life. The idea is to present an artistic perception of the marine world along with the display of your exotic fish collection.

Aquarium backgrounds are also quite common in most homes – these provide a complete canvas on the back wall of the aquarium, creating a theme on which the whole perception of the aquarium is then based on.

However, you should remember to wash everything with water and make sure that they are clean before you put them in the aquarium. Moreover, you should always use labeled and certified products as aquarium decorations. Using uncertified products might contaminate the water and result in the killing of fish. Many decorative pieces that otherwise are very cute can have toxic substances coated on them, and these might decompose in the water inside the tank – harming your fish as a result.

At the end of the day, you should keep in mind that the well-being of your fish is the top priority and all aquarium decorations are just secondary embellishments.
